Formerly a nine-hole course, Grand Traverse Resort and Spa - Spruce Run in Acme, Michigan, was transformed into an 18-hole track in the 1970s and later redesigned by University of Michigan Golf Coach William Newcomb in 1979. Spruce Run received its name because of the many spruce and fir trees that line the fairways, creating challenging elements that warranted its selection to host the Michigan Open from 1981 through 1984. Although spruce trees are aplenty, the layout at Spruce Run does not play nearly as difficult as The Bear or The Wolverine. And with pristine bentgrass tees, greens and fairways, Grand Traverse Resort and Spa - Spruce Run is the best of what Northern Michigan golf has to offer
