Best Golf Courses Near Stamford, CT
Stamford, Connecticut, located on Long Island Sound halfway between Manhattan and New Haven, is the largest financial district outside of New York City. While the southwest corner of Connecticut is laden with private country clubs with golf courses, a number of very good municipal courses can be found in this affluent area as well. Stamford’s two munis are attractive options for tee times. Sterling Farms Golf Course rambles in a tranquil setting on the expansive rolling terrain of an old dairy farm. Year after year it rates #1 among public courses in Fairfield County. Stamford’s older muni, E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course, became an 18-hole layout back in 1925. A few ponds enter the fray on this somewhat tight, tree-lined layout that locals call “The Heights.” Oak Hills Park Golf Course, a muni in nearby Norwalk, is a picturesque, moderately hilly layout that players of all skill levels can handle. Crossing into New York State, the Pete Dye-designed Pound Ridge Golf Club has a reputation for being a beautiful but diabolical course in Purchase, New York. Pound Ridge is one of the top public courses in all of New York State. After golf, downtown Stamford beckons with its array of antique shops, unique boutiques, restaurants, galleries and two restored historic theaters—Avon Theatre and the Palace Theatre, which now serves as a performing arts center. The Stamford Museum and Nature Center is another popular attraction. In summer, nearby beaches draw big crowds.
