Settled in 1780, Bardstown, located 35 miles south of the Louisville airport, is Kentucky’s second oldest city. This town of roughly 12,000 people has a storied history and a few other attractions. Among them are the more than 10 distilleries within 16 miles of Bardstown’s court square, giving Bardstown the reputation as the bourbon capital of the world. At one time named the “Most Beautiful Small Town in America,” by Rand McNally and USA Today, Bardstown has more than 300 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the stagecoach stop that was built in 1779 and still stands today as a tavern, restaurant, and bed & breakfast. There are also plenty of golf courses in and around Bardstown. Among the most popular public golf courses are semi-private Bardstown Country Club’s Mayfield Course, which plays more than 7,200 yards, and the Kenny Rapier Golf Course at My Old Kentucky Home State Park. The latter, an 18-hole layout that plays around 6,300 yards, opened in 1933.
