Though it gained fame as a world-class trout fishing destination thanks to the movie “A River Runs Through it,” Missoula, Montana may be better known as one of the most attractive college towns in the country. The University of Montana is Missoula’s pride and joy and it boasts the oldest golf course in the city, an updated 9-hole layout from 1924 that enjoys a mountain setting just off campus. County-owned Larchmont Golf Club is a popular 18-hole tee time for all levels of players as it extends over flat terrain with elevated greens and tees. You’ll see nice houses and mountain vistas at Canyon River Golf Club, a layout that anchors an upscale residential community that is ringed by the Canyon River. Highlands Golf Club, which commands high ground overlooking the Missoula Valley, has nine greens but 18 teeing positions, while Linda Vista Golf Course is a par-29 executive layout. Missoula residents love being outdoors and active. One of the more popular hikes is the “M” Trail on Mount Sentinel that starts beside the university.
