Best Golf Courses Near Southport, NC
The historic, picture postcard town of Southport, North Carolina, located 30 miles south of Wilmington, looks like a movie set, which it is (We’re the Millers, for instance). It sits at the northernmost reaches of the fabulous North Carolina/South Carolina Grand Strand golf mecca that includes Myrtle Beach, though it is thankfully nothing like Myrtle Beach. Southport makes a fine base for playing a number of courses in the Brunswick Islands. One of the jewels of the region is Oak Island Golf Club, a flat, wide open course on the ocean that is constantly susceptible to the wind. The Oak Island Par Three at South Harbour is a delightful 18-hole par-3 muni on the Intracoastal Waterway on South Brunswick Island. It’s ideal for a family outing or a knockabout with friends. Two other facilities, Lockwood Folly and the 27-hole Carolina National, ramble along the Lockwood Folly River and provide a steady dose of the low country game. The most noteworthy and memorable course in Southport’s orbit is Bald Head Island Golf Course. It’s the lone course on an island that is only accessible by passenger ferry from Southport or by private boat. Bald Head is a car-free island. The game here is a stunning journey over rolling dunes and around lagoons and marshes. The entire experience is unforgettable, as is the town of Southport.
