Perhaps best known for its Newark Earthworks, Newark has all sorts of interesting things for visitors to see and do. Built by the Hopewell Indians thousands of years ago, the Earthworks contains the largest earthen enclosures in the world, about 3,000 acres, and is open to the public. Newark has some other interesting outdoor sites as well, like the Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve and Dawes Arboretum, which includes nearly 2,000 acres of plant collections, gardens and natural areas. In addition to scores of restaurants and bars in this suburb of Columbus, there’s also the Works Museum, which celebrates glass blowing among other crafts, and the Midland Theater for live entertainment.
