Appleton, located in the Fox River Valley just north of Lake Winnebago and 30 miles southwest of Green Bay, is best known as a center for paper making and for being the hometown of the great magician Harry Houdini. The city features two eighteen-hole layouts. Reid Golf Course is a parkland-style muni that dates back to the late 1920s. It was updated in 2013. Chaska Golf Course is a sterner and more expansive test that rambles over 200 acres. Larry Packard’s varied design challenges even the most skilled players with its combination of woods, wind and water. For additional tee time options, consider the courses in and around Neenah, another Fox city just to the south of Appleton. After golf, allow some time to explore attractions such as the Paper Discovery Center, the Hearthstone House, which was the world’s first private residence to be powered by hydroelectricity, and the History Museum of the Castle, where you will find a permanent exhibit devoted to Houdini.
