Best Golf Courses Near La Crosse, WI
Perched on the Mississippi and La Crosse rivers in the topographically resplendent Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin, La Crosse offers a rich selection of golf courses. Favored 18s closest to town are Forest Hills, an updated classic where golf has been played since 1892, and Fox Hollow, a dramatic, hilly layout that features one of only two island greens in the Badger State. Walsh Golf Center is a 9-hole executive course, but for nearly 60 years, Coulee Golf Bowl in nearby Onalaska has been a popular nine-holer where you can go bowling as well. A little farther from town, the environmentally conscious Drugan’s Castle Mound boasts a country club aura with eminently affordable green fees, while Trempealeau Mountain’s well-groomed fairways and greens ramble over rolling farmland. Just over the border in Winona, Minnesota, Cedar Valley and The Bridges also are prime lures for La Crosse golfers. While La Crosse has a reputation as a drinking town with lots of bars and plenty of college students, the most memorable attraction in the area is Grandad Bluff, which soars 600 feet above the city and overlooks a broad swath of the Driftless Area into Minnesota and Iowa. It’s been called “the most scenic view is Wisconsin.”
