Best Golf Courses Near Wausau, WI
Situated at the exact halfway point between the equator and the north pole, Wausau, a small city on the Wisconsin River, has a number of nine- and 18-hole courses that showcase the region’s rolling hills and Northwoods forests. The city’s original course, the 9-hole Tribute Golf Course, was an American Legion Post creation in 1929. Now it is a gorgeous, hilly, woodsy layout that just added a 10th hole, a short par 3 to a green fronted by a pond. The long neglected Trapp River Golf Course is now under the same management as Tribute. Conditions are already improving at this layout the rambles alongside the river. Pine Valley Golf Course races to a rousing finish on holes 15-18. The drama climaxes at the par-3 17th, which descends 60 feet from tee to green. Merrill Golf Club, a 1929-vintage course with an atmospheric aura in nearby Merrill, seems always to please everyone who plays it. Some 30 miles south of Wausau, Sentryworld in Stevens Point is a marvelous design with five acres of flower beds that help frame the varied collection of holes that beginners and highly skilled golfers alike can enjoy. Golf Digest has rated Sentryworld in the top 50 on its list of the Top-100 Public Golf Courses.
