Best Golf Courses Near Charleston, WV

Charleston, the capital of West Virginia, is a stunning riverfront city in the Appalachian Mountains. Alas, it is a far cry from a golf hotbed. The only two public access courses are municipal facilities. Coonskin Golf Course is an executive-style par-3 muni course that is only using its front nine. Cato Park is another 9-hole city facility that is free to play, but it is not maintained like most golf courses and it is closed on weekends. Neither of these Charleston facilities takes tee times. The closest public regulation 18 is in South Charleston. Little Creek Golf Course is a muni that holds many tournaments on its short and hilly layout that sports plenty of mountain vistas. Big Bend Golf Course, which features playing corridors carved through woodlands, can be another 18-hole option in Tornado. Golf aside, Charleston presents many opportunities to enjoy Wild, Wonderful West Virginia. The Kanawha River runs through the city and Kanawha State Forest is known for its trails and its abundant wildlife and birdlife. The majestic Charleston Capitol Building features a huge dome adorned with 22-karat gold leaf. It’s the most recognizable landmark in the city’s historic downtown. Tree-lined Capitol Street, the epicenter of activity downtown, stands out with everything from stunning architecture to boutiques, galleries, and restaurants to the indoor-outdoor Capitol Market. In summer, crowds come out to Appalachian Power Park to attend the minor league baseball games of the Charleston Dirty Birds.
